Billy Joe "Bill" Boutwell was a native of Wayne County, Miss., and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died Friday, July 8, 2005, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 72, born on Oct. 12, 1932. He retired from Delta Airlines Inc. and was a former partner in Acadian Travel Agency in Baton Rouge. He was a participant in the Baton Rouge Lions Club, a volunteer at Baton Rouge General Medical Center and a supervisory board member of SAIF Federal Credit Union. He graduated from Clara High School in Waynesboro, Miss., where he was class valedictorian. He was an alumnus of the University of Southern Mississippi and attended while it was still known as Mississippi Southern College. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in North Africa during the Korean War. He was a former lay minister and interim pastor for the Church of God in Dayton, Ohio. He was also a "master shopper." He enjoyed being a part of the travel industry for more than 50 years and traveled extensively during his life. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the LSU Tigers and the USM Golden Eagles. In his younger years, he enjoyed tennis and loved the game of croquet until a mallet injury ended that activity. "PawPaw's" greatest love in life was the time he spent with his beloved wife, Betty, his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his integrity, honesty and faith in God. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Riley Boutwell and Zellene Sanderson Boutwell Gerst; special aunt and uncle, Jenny Stockstill and Willis Pinkney Boutwell; brothers, Earl Boutwell and Millard Nicholson; and a sister, Ruth Boutwell Dantzler. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 50 years, Winnie "Betty" Holmes Boutwell; children, Anthony "Tony" Boutwell, St. Petersburg, Fla., Rhonda Boutwell Bourgeois and Richard Bourgeois, Sabrina Boutwell Ray, Lisa Boutwell Dumigan, Joseph "Joey" C. Boutwell and Rachel Ware Boutwell; grandchildren, Christina Boutwell, Melissa Boutwell Sauceda, Austin Boutwell, Alex Boutwell, Jodi Lynn Powell, Karli Diehl, Jaimie Ray and Kaitlynn Boutwell; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; sisters, Ruby Boutwell Brumfield and Helen Nicholson Duke; and his special family of Acadian Travel employees and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Hospice of Baton Rouge. Visitation was at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Sunday, July 10, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation at the funeral home chapel from 10 a.m. until service at noon Monday, July 11. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mark Robinson, Steve Wagner, Jim Dumigan, Keith Thibodeaux, Darryl White and Lee May. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Adcock, Horatio Thompson and Jimmy Brumfield. The family wishes to thank the ICU doctors and staff at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Dr. Kean Day, Dr. Leon Kraft and Dr. Joseph Albergamo.
