1st Sergeant ANDREW W. STEWART, Co. A, 86th Illinois

Andrew W. Stewart was probably born on March 17, 1838 in Marshall County, Virginia (today West Virginia). He was the son of William S. Stewart, who was born on __________ __, 1803 in Pennsylvania and who died on __________ __, 1896 in West Virginia, and Jane (Cunningham) Stewart, who was born on __________ __, 1804 in Pennsylvania and who died on __________ __, 1881 in __________. The children known to have been born to William and Jane are;
1. Agnes Stewart (1826-1852)
2. Robert C. Stewart (1828- )
3. Samuel Stewart (1832- )
4. James Foster Stewart (1834-1922)
5. Andrew W. Stewart (1838- )
6. Irwin Stewart (1840-1920)
7. Mary Jane Stewart (1843- )
8. William C. Stewart (1846- )

In the late 1840's, or more likely in the first half of the 1850's Andrew came west with his brother, Robert C. Stewart, where they settled in Olio Township of Woodford County, near Eureka, Illinois. Robert C. Stewart was married to Sarah Jane Handley on March 2 1856 in Woodford County. They are all found there at the time of the 1860 census. In that census, Robert is married with a couple small children. Andrew is living in his brother's household and is listed as a farm laborer.

On August 3, 1862, Andrew W. Stewart was one of the first 20 men to volunteer to service in a company which was being raised in Eureka and El Paso, Illinois in Woodford County by William S. Magarity, who had been the first man elected to serve as Woodford County Sheriff in the 1840's. At the time, Andrew was about 24 years of age.

When Magarity had about 100 volunteers, he took his company across the Illinois River to Peoria, Illinois where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 96 men of the Woodford County company were mustered into service as Co. A of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Magarity was elected Captain of Co. A. Andrew W. Stewart waselected by the men of Co. A to serve as their 3rd Sergeant.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th marched out of Camp Lyon through the streets of Peoria to the railroad station where they boarded trains bound for Camp Joe Holt, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, which was located on the Ohio River across from Louisville. After several weeks of drilling, the men of the 86th were assigned to a Brigade being commanded by General Daniel McCook and they were sent into Kentucky to chase down the last Confederate troops in Kentucky.
On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCooks Brigade participated in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, a Union victory, which helped to drive the last Confederate troops out of Kentucky. McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee where they began a long period of garrison duty.
During the next 2 and a half years, 3rd Sergeant Andrew W. Stewart served faithfully in Co. A as the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, Andrew was witness to and a participant in some of the bloodiest fighting of the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, Jonesboro, Georgia; Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina and also Marched with Sherman to the Sea.
On October 25, 1864, First Sergeant Joseph J. Jones was promoted to 1st Lieutenant to replace 1st Lt. Samuel T. Riogers, who was discharged on that date. 3rd Sergeant Andrew W. Stewart was then elected by the men of Co. A to serve as their First Sergeant.
After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington, D.C, where they marched down Pennsylvania Avenue on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, the surviving members of the 86th who were with the regiment in Washington D.C., including 1st Sergeant Andrew W. Stewart, were mustered out of the service. Shortly after that they were put on a train bound for Chicago, Illinois. After arriving in Chicago on June 12, 1865, the men of Co. A held an election to fill the position of 2nd Lieutenant in Co. A. This position had been left vacant since the promotion of then 2nd Lieutenant Samuel T. Rogers on October 2, 1863 to 1st Lt. to replace Joseph Major, who was promoted to Captain on that date. The men of Co. A elected Andrew W. Stewart to fill the position of 2nd Lieuteant. On June 21, 1865, the surviving members of the 86th received their final pay and were discharged. So on June 21, 1865, Andrew W. Stewart was serving as Co. A's 2nd Lieutenant, but he was never mustered as such. By the end of June, the surviving members of the 86th were home with their families in Central Illinois.
On January 8, 1868, Andrew W. Stewart was united in marriage to Rebecca M. Handley in Woodford County. Rebecca was the sister of Sarah Jane Handley, who was married to Andrew's brother, Robert. Rebecca M. Handley was born on __________ __, 18__ (c. 1838) at __________, Ohio, the daughter of __________ Handley, who was born in Ohio, and __________ (__________) Handley, who was born in Pennsylvania.
Two children, according to the 1900 census, as seen below were born to Andrew and Rebecca. They are likely;
1. Angie L. Stewart, born c. January __, 1872/74) in __________, Illinois in Livingston County; Angie, as seen below, was married to Dr. Daniel Doolittle; At the time of the 1910 census, she and her new husband, as seen below, are found residing in Los Angeles County, California with her father; In 1920 and 1930, Daniel and Angie are found in Los Angeles County, California; Dr. Doolittle died in the 1930's, very likely in Los Angeles County; At the time of the 1940 census, Angie Doolittle is found in Councilmanic District 10, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Township, Los Angeles County, California, apparently running a boarding house of some sort. She is listed as widowed;
Angie S Doolittle Head F 67 Illinois
Nina Macgargee Lodger F 55 Indiana
Eulah Benton Lodger F 35 Indiana
Leon Katz Lodger M 60 Russia
Sally M Maurer Lodger F 20 Alabama
Ray Maurer Lodger's wife M 21 Michigan
Francis Shirley Roomer F 33 Texas

Angie L. (Stewart) Doolittle died on 27 Mar 1957 in Los Angeles, California.

2. Alonzo T. Stewart, born and died in 1874, at about 3 months of age, and his mortal remains were laid in the Chatsworth-Charlotte Cemetery in Chatsworth, Livingston County, Illinois.

Did a little digging on Andrew Stewart....

I believe you have his parentage and siblings correct. It appears a brother of Andrew, Robert C. Stewart, moved to Olio (Eureka) Twp. and is there in 1860. In that census, his brother is married with a couple small children. Andrew is living in his brother's household and is listed as a farm laborer.

My Woodford County Marriage Index has the marriage of Andrew W. Stewart to Rebecca M. Handley on January 8, 1868. Incidentally, Robert C. Stewart was married to Sarah Jane Handley on March 2 1856 in Woodford County.

In the 1870 federal census, A. W. and R. H. Stewart are in Chatsworth, Charlotte Twp., Livingston Co., IL. Both Andrew and Rebecca are listed as 32 years of age.

In the 1880 federal census, Andrew and Rebbecca (as name spelled) appear in Chatsworth, Charlotte Twp., Livingston Co. IL. Andrew is 42 with birthplace as Virginia and parents b. in PA. They have one daughter, Angie L. Stewart b. abt 1872.

By the 1900 federal census, Andrew, Rebecca, and Angie are in San Jose, Los Angeles Co., CA. His birth is shown as March 1838 in West Virginia, Rebecca H. Stewart's birth is listed as July 1837 in IL; and Angie's birth listed as May 1876 in IL with father born in WV and mother in OH. This census shows Rebecca had TWO children with only one surviving. My suspicion is that the first child probably died in or around Chatsworth?? Carol"

In October of 2014, I received the following email from Mary Runyon Hanshew;

I was very glad to find your entry for Andrew W. Stewart and the photos. I believe I may have found the child of Andrew and Rebecca that died here.
You will find him on FAG under Alonzo T. Stewart,born and died in 1874, at about 3 months of age, buried in the Chatsworth-Charlotte Cemetery in Chatsworth, Livingston County, Illinois.
Hope this adds to your history of Andrew.
Thank you for the fine work that you do on FAG. I have belonged since 2001, but until I retired didn't have much time for it. It is a fabulous site and has been so much help in my war research.
Thanks again.
