Life magazine featured photo of him showing credentials to White House security guard to gain entry to White House press conference on December 8, 1941, regarding bombing of Pearl Harbor; Joe is wearing a note on his coat stating, "I am Chinese, not Japanese". During WW2 Joe taught judo and jujitsu to American military service members.
