Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in Gene Roden's Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Pat Otwell officiating. Graveside services and burial were held Thursday, May 21, at Greenwood Cemetery in Galena, 111. with Pastor Frederick Baltz officiating. Mr. Chetlain was born May 26, 1895, in Chicago, 111., a son of Arthur Henry and Lottie Lillieberg Chetlain. He married Blanche Looney on Nov, 8, 1944. He had three careers, diving his time between military service, law and education. During World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps and he and his three brothers became pilots and received commissions as second lieutenants. During the war he was Air Liason Officer for the 8th Service Command, headquartered in Dallas, where he was a coordinator of military affairs at all bases in the command's five- state area. He also served in Tokyo as Judge Advocate for the Far East Territory. He was on active duty during the Korean conflict, serving as inspector-general for othe 9th Air Force, stationed at Pope Air Force Base, Ft. Bragg, N.C. He retired in 1952, moving to Paris where he worked in Air Force recruiting, helping to establish offices in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. He was called back to active duty several times to serve as an instructor in specialized training courses. Col. Chetlain attended Yale University where he was a member of Zeta Psi Fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He graduated in 1923 and attended Northwestern Unviersity School of Law and received a Juris Doctor's degree. He and a brother opened the law firm of Chetlain and Chetlain in Chicago where they practived until the outbreak of World War II. During these years, Col. Chetlain maintained his Reserve commission. After moving to St. Louis in 1956, he received a master's degree in education from Washington University. He taught mathematics at the Principia Upper School and was secretary of admissions at Mary institute, a private girls 1 school. He retired in 1971 and returned to Paris. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Charlotte Kelsey of Paris and Gloria McPherson of Paris; a son-in-law, Capt. Alan McPherson of Paris; a brother, Kent G. Chetlain of Rollings Hills Estates, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
