Helen B. Chadwick Beal

1922 ~ 2012
This longtime Alaska resident, Helen B. Chadwick Beal, was born November 22, 1922 in American Fork, Utah. She went to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Floyd, on May 21, 2012, just 6 months before her 90th birthday. She died in Palmer at the Alaska Pioneer Home. She will be laid to rest in the American Fork Cemetery, American Fork, Utah. She graduated from American Fork High School in 1941. She attended Utah State College in Logan, Utah specializing in Nursing but which was halted because of WWII. Helen married the love of her life and soul mate, Floyd Carl Beal, on June 9, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. Floyd (Bud) and their four children drove the long and dusty Alcan Highway to Palmer, Alaska in May, 1956. She resided in the Matanuska Susitina Valley for 56 years. Mom preferred living in Palmer, Alaska, and always called it home. She was a great homemaker, and established an atmosphere where her children and their friends felt welcome. She was known for her sharp, clear memory and was a prudent saver.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was especially proud of the role she served as Mission Primary President in the Alaska Canadian Mission under the direction of Stewart and Leola Durrant, who were also lifelong friends.

Helen was active with her children and their many life activities. After her children left home, she participated in the Alaska State Fair, Diabetic and Parkinson's local groups. Her many interests included: top notch knitter, making sweaters, and many hand knit socks for family, especially Christmas socks; crocheted afghan-sewed clothing, quilted bedspreads and baby blankets. She enjoyed photographing family members, did yard work and flower gardening. She was a faithful letter writer to friends and family, remembering birthdays and relatives other special dates. She never missed family occasions and had an extensive list for Christmas Cards. As her sight began to fail, she enjoyed keeping up friendships and had lively conversations by phone.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Clara Mirriam Butt Chadwick and Glen Chadwick, plus her husband, Floyd Carl Beal; two brothers and three sisters. She is remembered fondly and forever by her children: Glay Dan'L (Bev) Beal of West Valley City, Utah, Teresa (John R) Garland of Greenbackville, Virginia, Terry (Susan) Beal of Eagle River, Alaska, Gregory (Ginger) Beal of Palmer, Alaska. She had 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren (3 deceased). Also 8 brothers and sisters: Bill (Bessie) Chadwick, both deceased, Frances (Max) Dickerson, both deceased, Mary (Tom) Shepard, both deceased, Don (Verna) Chadwick, Clara Mae (Joe) Diperno, both deceased, Tim (Leila) Chadwick, Chris deceased (Thora) Chadwick, Clark (Julia ) Chadwick and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
