After the death of her mother, the family moved to the east side of Detroit in 1889 and she began working for the St. Aubin family at the age of 16. Her challenge there was to learn to cook for the French family since she had learned the German way of cooking. She stayed with that position for six years.
Later, May worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company as a seamstress. Her skill as such led her to become a fitter at one of the Detroit's downtown stores where she was employed for 23 years. She retired in 1940 and began collecting Social Security at a time when there were only 63 charter beneficiaries state wide.
