Mary Ann Flynn was the fourth child of Benjamin Anderson Flynn and Susan Watson Flynn. [B. A. Flynn was b. unk. but perhaps around 1800 in South Carolina or Georgia; d. unk., but perhaps ca. 1850 in Alabama; bd. unk.; m. 6 Jul 1831 in Coweta Co., GA, to Susan Watson of "the Watsons of Georgia" (b. ca. 1810-1815; d. 8 Jul 1902; bd. at Smyrna Bapt. Ch. Cem. in Coosa Co., AL]. Mary Ann married John A. Lee in Coosa Co., AL just before he enlisted in the 60th Alabama Rgt., and she waited through the duration of the War for him to return. He did return, indeed, walking home the summer of 1865 with his friend, Sgt. John F. Vardaman, from the surrender at Appomattox. That fall, John Vardaman married Mary Ann's older sister, secondborn Julia Ann Flynn.
[Mary Ann and John Lee bought a 3-piece suite of bedroom furniture in Coosa Co., then sold it to John and Julia before the Lees moved to Wood Co., Texas, in the early 1870's. The furniture survives today in the home of one of the Vardamans' descendants.]
