FERN PARK, Fla. — James M. Bartz, 77, died of congestive heart failure on Friday, July 6, 2001, at his home in Fern Park, Fla.

He was born on April 21, 1924, in Sidney Center, N.Y., the son of Jacob and Marjorie (Brown) Bartz.

A 1942 graduate of Sidney High School, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946 as a weather observer.

On June 26, 1948, Jim was united in marriage to Maxine Cronauer, daughter of Ellis and Dorothea (Brinkman) Cronauer, at the Sidney Center Methodist Church.

Jim received a bachelor's of arts degree from Hartwick College in 1961, a master's degree in education from the State University College at Oneonta in 1970, and studied at the Westminster Theological Seminary.

As an ordained Methodist clergyman, the Rev. Bartz served churches in Mount Upton-Rockdale, Afton-North Afton, Schenevus-Westford, and Bainbridge-Union Valley. Pastor Jim was a leader in the Christian Friendship Caravan, taking groups of young people to Western Europe in 1955, 1958 and 1965.

Between 1967 and 1980, Jim was a guidance counselor at the Mount Upton and Afton Central Schools, and taught classes at Greene Central School and SUNY Morrisville.

Throughout his life, Jim was interested in emergency medical care. He joined the Afton Fire Department, served with the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, and was instrumental in forming the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, of which he was a lifetime member.

In 1980, Jim and Maxine moved to Orlando, Fla., where he was employed in the Human Resources Department at the Orlando Regional Medical Center. After assisting in the development of ORMC's Pastoral Care Department, the Rev. Bartz served as a staff chaplain and education coordinator, creating a cancer residency program for Orlando area clergy. Retiring in 1989, he continued with ORMC as a part-time chaplain until 1999.
