A family tradition which survived in a collateral line to mine, John D. Laughlin and a Mr. Adamson took a boat load of hogs, sheep, cattle and corn down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans and never came back. Family members were told that they both died of cholera in Memphis, Tennessee in 1833. Ralph Kenneth Laughlin places his date of death as July 2, 1832. Both, however, state that John's family believed that John and his companion had been robbed and murdered. Ralph Kenneth Laughlin, also a descendant of John O.M. Laughlin, further reports that John D. Laughlin, who he refers to as Dick, was still a resident of Kentucky during the time of his service in the War of 1812. Military records indicate that he was present during the Battle of the Thames.

Sarah (Gillis) Laughlin's headstone states that she was the "Wife of J.D. Laughlin".
