John Bernhardt Lebrecht Steiding came to America with his wife Mariea Elizabeth (Batree) Steiding in 1856 and went to Barton, Allegany County, Maryland.
They were the parents of 10 children: Wilhemina "Minnie" Steiding, John Ernst Steiding, Herman Steiding, Albert Steiding, Ferdinand Steiding, Mary Augusta Steiding, Annie Maria Steiding, Elizabeth "Lizzy" Steiding, Marie Steiding, and Henry Gerald Steiding.
The first five children were born in Barton and the other five children were born in Garrett County, Maryland.
After the death of his first wife Mariea Elizabeth died in 1901, he married Amanda Susan Lohr. They adopted a 7 year old son , Walter Knox.
After, Amanda died in 1915, John Bernhardt applied at age 85, 10 November 1916 in Oakland, Md. for a marriage license. He married a third time to Elmira Costanza "Ella" Gibson Moore. Ella had two sons by her widowed husband.
"Bernhardt" Steiding's homestead was located at the present day intersection of the Turkey Neck and Steiding Church Roads.
