According to Faye Swanberg:
The Masters brothers, Wallace Henry (1870-1958) and Sanford Anthony (1867-1930), of German descent, came from Ohio to Wetmore, Michigan in 1885 when they were only teenagers, about 15 & 17. In a period when many residents lived by hunting and trapping, the Masters boys quickly earned reputations as "the best"--a sobriquet they shared with the Powell brothers. They ranged the county, hunting deer for food for lumber camps and for sale in the cities--an activity which was then legal. Wally once killed 17 deer in one day! In his youth, Wally was also a traveling salesman in the county, selling clothes and books, etc., to residents in outlying areas and lumber camps. The brothers worked into timber cruising and eventually worked for Foster's Lumber Company, owners of a large shingle and sawmill in Munising. Wally continued for years and acquired lands which became the basis for a real estate business in his later years.

Wallace Henry Masters is said to have given Powell Lake its name. He built a log cabin on Powell Lake in 1925, and for decades his family spent summers at that log cabin.
