Taylor Lynn Carter, 17, of Lake Wales passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Lake Wales Medical Center due to respiratory failure.
She was born June 30, 1994 in Bartow and was a lifelong resident of Lake Wales. She was a student at Lake Wales High School, a member of the Interact Club and played violin in the Orchestra. Taylor enjoyed going to school and loved reading. As a member of Christ Central Church in Lake Wales, she loved helping people by volunteering at the church food pantry and she touched many people's lives.
Taylor was preceded in death by her grandparents, Vernon & Susan Byrd and Phillip Carter. Survivors include her parents, Steven & Christina Carter of Lake Wales; biological mother, Candida Watson of Alabama; siblings, Austin Carter, Kimberly Caban, Dana Lange and Patrick Johnson; grandparents, Edna & Michael Pokorny; aunts & uncles, Stephanie Carter, Angela & Greg Wood, Jeremiah Smith and her extended family.
Visitation was held from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home. Funeral service was held at 3:00 pm Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Christ Central Church in Lake Wales. Interment followed at the Lake Wales Cemetery.
At the beginning of her service, there was a video tribute. Rev. John Cannon performed her service, and Taylor's youth pastor, her high school orchestra teacher, her principal, and the pastor's wife all spoke and gave tribute to her. Taylor's entire high school orchestra performed "Amazing Grace" and "You Raise Me Up" along with former members who had already graduated and her middle school orchestra teacher. During the interment at the cemetery, one of Taylor's orchestra friends performed "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. She was well loved by her family, friends, her church, and her community and she will be forever missed.
Taylor left us in the early morning on May 27, 2012. We'll never forget that morning as long as we live. My son and I were up playing X-Box and it was around 3 AM. We never stay up that late but for some reason we were wide awake. Taylor had been in her room watching some movies and she came out saying she was having a difficult time breathing. She had asthma and her inhaler usually worked when she was having shortness of breath. This morning, the medicine no longer worked. She took it and went back into her room, only to come back within seconds all hysterical and yelling that she couldn't breathe. I threw my shoes on and was going to rush her to the hospital. She got to the front door and collapsed on our front porch. My wife called 911 which took them 10 rings to answer and when they did answer, the person on the other end said "Hello"...not this is 911. It took the ambulance about 10 minutes to arrive and the hospital is mere blocks from our home. By the time they arrived, she had already started turning blue and we desperately tried CPR with no results. They arrived and worked on her on our porch for 15 minutes or so then put her in the ambulance and rushed her to the hospital. We arrived and they told us they could not revive her. I'm still haunted with the image of seeing her take her last breath on the porch and I felt helpless. She had so much going for her. She would have been taking summer courses at the college this past summer and she would have been graduating high school this year. She was one month shy of turning 18. We are still devastated by the sudden shock of the events that morning and still don't understand why someone with so much going for them and such a bright future had to be called away to heaven. I guess God was ready to hear her to play the violin in person. We love you baby girl!!!
