Producer and theater owner. Immigrated to the United States at the age of four. His father was not able to adequately financially sustain Sam and his siblings, so at a very young age Sam became a shoeshine boy to help provide for his parents and siblings. He later obtained a job at the Grand Opera House, which apparently had made a lasting impression on Sam. After later becoming its treasurer, he acquired enough money to put him and his two brothers in business. The three of them became the most successful theater powerhouse with the most enviable reputation. Their vaudeville shows and featured actors and actresses pushed them to the top. Tragically, Sam was killed as the result of a train accident, but his legacy continued through his brothers who made the Shubert name famous with theater.
