Robert Avina, born July 8, 1938, in San Jose, CA. Although paralyzed and in a wheelchair for 40 years, he studied to become a paralegal and was an adviser at the Silicon Valley Living Center. His physical problems began on Dec. 30, 1963, when he was rushing to the scene of an accident on his police motorcycle. His cycle collided with a truck amd his neck was broken. Mr. Avina had a special friend--Alma, a golden retriever trained to help rehabilitate patients. The dog, who would gently place her paws on his chest, was scheduled to be taken to his funeral.
