Alexander was the grandson of Robert & Sarah Abernathy.

Alexander was the son of "Smith Abernathy" - mother unknown. They had 3 sons, and 4 daughters. Alexander Abernathy I, is the only child I have record of (no names on the early Census records)

At age 22, Alexander joined the Methodist Society. And shortly after, professed Religion and was licensed to preach. Alexander (age 24), married Elizabeth Wilkie in Rutherford County in 1814. After laboring with the Methodist for several years(1812 - 1815), he and his wife moved to Burke County. Shortly after the move to Burke County, he and his wife joined the Baptist Church. Alexander was Baptized by Hosea Holcombe on April 26, 1817.

He was a minister with a passion, and was very active with many churches and various Baptist associations of the area during these early years. Alexander died in 1866, before the establishment of Bethany Church in Hildebran (today's First Baptist Church of Hildebran), but his groundwork in the ministry leading up to the founding of the Church - was most likely pivotal in the formation of this Church in 1888.
