Married Joan Cutler September 5, 1952, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. His father died during the Depression when he was a teenager. Much of the responsibility of helping his mother fell on his shoulders. He joined the Navy right out of high school and sent every spare dollar home to his mother. He served in World War II and spent eight years on active duty, rising to Chief Petty Officer, and then spent five years in the Naval Reserve.

He graduated from the University of South Carolina and received his law degree from George Washington University School of Law in Washington, DC. He was in private practice since 1953, except for six years when he was Assistant U.S. District Attorney for the state of Utah. He was a City Judge Pro Tem, Small Claims Court Judge, and an appraiser for Salt Lake County. He also taught classes at the BYU College of Continuing Education.

He was active in governmental affairs, including politics. He ran for the Utah and South Carolina State Legislature, U.S. House of Representatives Utah 2nd District, and 3rd District Court Judge for the state of Utah. He was elected and served in the South Carolina State Legislature.

Dad had a passion for baseball. After World War II, he pitched for the University of South Carolina and tried out for the major leagues. He managed and coached WBBA, Pony League, Babe Ruth, American Legion, and ward teams for over 50 years. He was known and referred to by all of his players as "Coach."

He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in several callings including gospel doctrine teacher, athletic director, and special interest/dance instructor.

Dad's greatest love and joy were his wife, family, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with and being surrounded by his family. He is the greatest husband, father, and grandfather for which we could have ever wished.
