William Choate was born on 10 October 1863 to Doctor John and Sarah Jane Stewart Choate in Fentress County, Tennessee. He was the first born of this marriage, which produced three children. A sister was born on 10 August in 1866 and died in infancy. Another sister, Mary Louisa was born 20 July 1867, and died the following June of 1868, allmost three months after their mother died.
Doctor John apparently asked his parents to raise William, for the 1870 census for Austin and Mary Choate reflect William residing in their household. In August of 1872 his father married for the second time to Clarinda Fatima Wells, but no known record indicates William joined this family. William died on 22 March, 1876, and a young age of 12.
