Born September 28, 1923, in Horry County, S.C., Mr. Ray was the son of the late Franklin Asbury Ray and the late Dolly Betris Sarvis Ray, and the beloved husband of Dorothy Mae Burnett of Loris, S.C. Mr. William Chancey and Sallie Agnes Suggs raised him. While he lived most of his life in Horry County, S.C., he lived in the Charleston and Summerville areas for a short time. Mr. Ray was a member of the Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church and a long time member of the Masons.
Survivors including his wife of 62 years, are three sons, William LaRue Ray and wife, Rebecca Ann Crum of Dumfries, Va., Douglas Wayne Ray and wife, Brenda Gail Johnson of Summerville, S.C., and Dennis Lynn Ray of Loris; two half-brothers, Nathan M Ray from Charlotte, N.C., and Roland Lester Ray from Mullins, S.C.; one half-sister, Tabitha Brunk of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Kenneth LaRue Ray and wife, Elizabeth ''Lisa'' Comfort, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Tanya Michelle Ray, and Misti Denise Reed and husband, David Preston Reed, all of Summerville, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Jesse James Clark Ray, Heaven Leigh Ray, Cody Jean Ray, and Tarynn Michelle Reed. Mr. Ray was predeceased by one brother, James Franklin Ray; and one half-brother, Daniel Jesse Ray.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery. Officiated by Dr. Mike Watford and the Rev. Rocky Gregory. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hardwick Funeral Home.
