Apocryphal story has it that Rosetta was (illegitimate) daughter of the last Earl of Glencairn and that she was placed in a convent to prevent her marriage to Archibald. The 14th Earl of Glencairn, James Cunningham (who was a patron of Robert Burns) died of consumption in January, 1791. He was unmarried. James' brother John inherited the title. John Cunningham continued the family military tradition and became an officer in the 14th Dragoons. After leaving the military he took Holy Orders in the Church of England. The 15th Earl of Glencairn, John Cunningham, had married Isabella Erskine, daughter of the Earl of Buchan, in 1785. He died September 24, 1796 without children. He was buried at St. Cuthbert's, at the base of Edinburgh Castle. The title of Earl of Glencairn went dormant with his passing.

As the story goes, Archibald "stole" Rosetta away from the convent, got married, made their way to a shipyard (presumably Glasgow) and purchased passage to America, settling in New York. The couple changed the spelling of the name from Conn to Cone, apparently to prevent the "Earl" from finding them. The Earl, of course, was long dead by 1816. The factual evidence to support such a story doesn't exist, but it is a fun story that has been passed down the generations, nonetheless.
