The 2nd son of Edward Sandy (the son of a tavern keeper, a baker by trade who immigrated to America sometime around 1820 from Bristol Gloucestershire England) and Hannah Sandy (maiden name unknown). Benjamin Franklin Sandy was a spring-maker by trade.

On July 1st, 1861, Ben enlisted in Company A of the 29th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment also known as "The Jackson Regiment of Infantry" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in every battle with the regiment from that date, until July 1864, he was mustered out at the expiration of services of his 3 year enlistment. At the battle of Winchester, Benjamin F. Sandy and most of his regiment were captured and Ben spent several months in a Confederate POW camp. He was paroled and rejoined his regiment. Benjamin Franklin Sandy served for a time on duty with the 109th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, and served valiantly with his comrades of the 29th Pennsylvania on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg.

On November 29th 1864 Ben married Catharine 'Kate' N. Allen at Nineteenth Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. They had 1 daughter and 1 son. Their daughter was Marion Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sandy born in 1865. Their son was George Washington Sandy who was born and died the same year, in 1867. Kate passed away on July 14th 1889.

Benjamin F. Sandy spent some time in Soldier's homes in Dayton Ohio (1890) and Hampton Virginia (1893) and Elizabeth City VA (1900) from ailments that he picked up in the Civil War including loss of hearing, vision and arthritis. He must have returned to Philadelphia about 1891 or 1892 as he was married to his 2nd wife, named Mary Hamass in Philadelphia.

On January 16, 1904, Benjamin F. Sandy passed away. He is buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd Pennsylvania.
