Henry was probably the son of John and Catherine (possibly Lee) Batman. According to his war pension file he was born in Virginia. To clarify confusion about his birth place and his ancestors residence: the county he was born in was divided in 1776; they were then in Kentucky Co Virginia. Counties divided again, they were in Jefferson County, then these counties seceded from Virginia to Kentucky. In 1792 Kentucky became the 15th state in the Union, and their residence was Jefferson County, Kentucky. Therefore, he may have never moved, his address just changed several times.

Henry married Mary "Polly" Reed Jun 13 1797 in Jefferson Co Kentucky (listed in Kentucky Marriages 1802-1850). She was the daughter of John Reed per the marriage bond signed by Henry and his father John. See on Mary's memorial.

They had 10 children:
Nancy Batman Peyton Anderson 1798-1850
John Batman 1802-1859
Catherine Batman Evans 1807-1865
Rebecca Batman Hubbard 1807-1870
Cynthia Batman Dillman 1809-1878
James Batman 1811-1872
Andrew Jackson Batman Sr 1813-1864
Hiram Batman 1815-1866
Eleanor Batman Scott 1818-1869
Jonathan Batman 1820-?

Sgt Henry Batman served in Capt. Spier Spencer's Mounted Rifleman under Gen William Henry Harrison, future president of the USA, in the Wabash Campaign of the Indian War of 1811
Their unit was called the "Yellow Jackets" His Pension file is O.W. Inv. #25995

The many certified statements in his pension application attesting to his wound revealed that he was wounded in the Battle of Tippecanoe Nov 7 1811 fight with the Indians. Shot (with a ball) above the elbow and broke the bone, as a result had his right arm amputated about four inches from the shoulder. He was in the hospital 2 months and 7 days at Vincennes and applied for pay during that time along with his pension. His disability prevented him from following his trade, a carpenter and farmer, and providing well for his family.

The Battle of Tippecanoe was re-enacted for the Harrison County Indiana Sesquicentennial year in 1966. Sgt Henry Batman was one of the historical characters from the "Yellow Jackets of Harrison County" appearing in the pageant. The program noted he served as a doorkeeper for the 1815 Territorial Assembly.
An account of the battle is told in Arville L Funk's "The Yellow Jackets March to Tippecanoe." A brief excerpt;
"At about 4:30 on the morning of Nov 7th the left flank of the army was suddenly attacked by a large number of howling savages. ...The Yellow Jackets position was severely attacked, and one of the first to fall was Captain Spencer. . . .among the wounded was Sgt Henry Batman. Almost three hours after the battle started, the Prophet (Tecumseh] followers began to drift away from the battlefield and peace settled over the bloody area that had been the camp of the expedition.. . . .The day after the battle a detachment from the army entered the abandoned Indian capital and burned the village. The next day, Nov 9th , the army began it long trek back to Vincennes. The wounded were placed on the rough wagons for three day to Ft. Boyd then on boats for the remainder of the trip to Vincennes. . . .they arrived Nov 17th. They went again into camp near Shakerstown where they mustered for the last time and were dismissed from further service by Governor Harrison. "Sergeant Batman, who had been wounded, was left in charge of the other wounded members of the company who stayed at Vincennes to recuperate from their injuries."
Hoke Cemetery
Hoke Cemetery is in Posey Township, Harrison Co, Indiana, and this property was owned by Henry at the time of his death, and it is believed Henry Batman is buried here. It was sold by his heirs to the Hoke family in about 1837. See map insert of Posey Township. This information is from a cousin Elmer Bowman (deceased) descendant from Henry's son John and gave a copy of the map to my mother Liona Watkins Johnson, also a descendant of John, in about 1970. In 2016 the Harrison County officials, cleaned the Hoke cemetery and restored the headstones. No stone was found for Henry, but there were two unmarked depressions at the front of the cemetery that they believed to be grave sites and were those of Henry and Mary if they were buried there. I have a copy of the Hoke family history describing the entire family and listing those buried there. Contact me if you would like a copy.
