George's middle initial M comes from his daughter Letitia's wedding document. On his son George's memorial a story about the family relates that George senior's father immigrated from Scotland.


George married Letitia Wilcox before 1827 in Virginia.

From 1830 - 1850 the census records relate that they lived in western Virginia counties that eventually became Jackson Co, WV. In 1860 just before the Civil War, they resided in Cabell county, VA.

George and his son disagreed on which side they should serve during the Civil War. A sad story about the family may be found on their son George's memorial via the link below.

In 1864, he was imprisoned at the Rock Island Confederate Prison, in Rock Island, IL where he died on September 1st.
