He was born to parents Oskar Kaleb (became Oscar Karl) Dahlquist and Elin (Ellen) C/Kristina Karlsson/Carlson. His father emigrated to the USA in 1903, Carl Joseph followed with his mother and two siblings, arriving in New York, New York May 15, 1904 on the ship United States. The family joined his father in Negaunee, Michigan where Carl Joseph lived the rest of his life. He married Cecelia Augusta Isaacson February 19, 1916 in Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. They had 7 children, 2 of whom were stillborn. Harold Carl, Joseph Stuart, Ruth Lucille, Robert Myron and Betty Cecelia all married as adults. Carl Joseph was an iron miner and eventually an assistant superintendent of the Cambria mine. He died of tuberculosis in the Morgan Heights Sanitarium.
