Merle Wesley Ascue, resident of Lamont and former resident of Ponca City, died Saturday, June 2, 2012, in Hillcrest Manor Nursing Center in Blackwell. He was 94.

Merle was born Sept. 30, 1917, in Kingman, Kan., the son of Frederick "Lee" and Emma "Ethel" Tyson Ascue.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7, in Pond Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson Funeral Home in Tonkawa.

Merle grew up in Pond Creek graduating from Pond Creek High School. He worked at the Lockheed Aircraft plant before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in June 1945, where he served aboard the USS New Jersey and was honorable discharged in 1946.

He married Dorothea Sharkey on Feb. 23, 1941, in Wichita, Kan., and they celebrated 71 years of marriage before she passed away May 18, 2012. They moved to the Lamont area in 1953 where he was a farmer.

Merle is survived by his son, Steve Ascue of Lamont; his daughter, Saundra Sue Bates of Rockledge, Fla.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Furl and Dwayne Ascue, both of Tonkawa; and numerous other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
