Air tragedy devastates Mar Vista family

A Mar Vista woman and her two young children, helping a family friend move into his new Cerritos home Sunday, are believed to have been killed by burning wreckage from the midair collision of a DC-9 and light plane.

Xochitl Cronkhite and her children, Toni, 9, and Temo, 5, are missing and presumed dead. The three were helping Dennis Wong move into his Ashworth Place home when it was struck by debris from the Aeromexico jetliner.

The Cronkhites are among 16 people presumed dead in Cerritos following Sunday's tragedy. It is unknown whether Wong was one of the victims.

Bill Gold, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, said none of the estimated 24 victims on the ground has been positively identified.

Wong and Mrs. Cronkhite 's husband, Bruce, were fellow workers at McDonnell Douglas Helicopter near Marina del Rey, neighbors and company officials said.

Asked if members of his family were killed Sunday, Cronkhite said "yes," but declined further comment.

Toni Cronkhite was to begin the fourth grade at Playa del Rey Elementary School next week, school principal Joseph January said today.

January described Toni as a "very bright and lively little girl" whose family was actively involved with the school.

"The entire family was a very positive force in our school," he said. "The mother volunteered many times in many ways and attended parent meetings. The older girl who survived was our student council president last year."

The school hopes to have a memorial service for the family, January said.

"Most of the teachers know by now and we're planning to do something but I don't know what," he said. "The family was very much involved in the school and I'm searching for ideas on doing something to memorialize them."

The apparent death of Mrs. Cronkhite was reported Wednesday by rescue crews, but the Coroner's Office said it could not confirm the reports today.

Five bodies reportedly were discovered in Wong's new Ashworth Place home.Ground casualty of the Cerritos Air Disaster.
