Barney was the 3rd child of Thomas F. Cone and Mary E. Rogers and grew up in Dooly County. He moved to Macon and married Florrie Lou Sullivan, and they had 4 daughters. Florrie died in childbirth, leaving him with 4 girls. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist church. He remained a widower for 10 years until he married the young widow Maggie Nora Golden Lifsey. Barney died only 14 months later, leaving Maggie with the 4 girls. He was only 41 years old when he died.
