Dr Robert C Moon In the death of Dr Moon of Philadelphia the blind have lost their best friend During his long medical career in this city he was actively interested in the work of various organizations for the improvement of the blind both physically and mentally Dr Moon's father who lost his sight early in life was the inventor of the embossed type for the blind known as the Moon Type For many years Dr Moon assisted his father in preparing maps both geographical and astronomical and transcribing many books for the adult blind It is a well known fact that the adult blind can very readily acquire the art of reading the Moon type when they cannot acquire the tactile touch for the dotted type He held an English medical degree but he was also graduated from the Jefferson Medical College and before he came to America he attended the ophthalmic clinics in London Paris and Utrecht He was Vice Consul for Liberia a member of the Historical and Geneological Societies of Pennsylvania of the New England Historical Geneological Society the Harleian Society of London He was a trustee of the Moon Society for the Blind in England Secretary of the Pennsylvania Home Teaching Society and Free Circulating Library for the Blind President of the Chapin Home for Aged Blind Treasurer of the Blind Relief Fund a member of the Advisory Board of the New York Association for the Blind and the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind Among his writings on professional subjects is A Handy Book of Ophthalmic Surgery 1866 which he wrote in conjunction with JZ Laurence FRCS He also wrote The Morris Family having married Miss Margaret H Morris 1886 a daughter of the late Anthony P Morris of this city Dr Moon's genial nature made him a lovable character to all who came in contact with him His reminiscences of the English French and Dutch ophthalmologists were most interesting and entertaining Having intimately known such shining lights in their day as Laurence Mackenzie Wharton Jones Donders and the elder Critchett Sir William Bowman the master operator of them all and many others At the last meeting of the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Home Teaching Society and the Free Circulating Library for the Blind the following minute was adopted The Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Home Teaching Society and the Free Circulating Library for the Blind desire to express their profound regret at the loss sustained by the death on February 13th of their friend and much esteemed secretary Dr Robert C Moon His work on behalf of the blind is so well known that to comment upon it seems almost impossible He has acted for fifteen years as Secretary of the Society and has constantly followed up the good work of his father Dr William Moon of England and in 1882 introduced into America the embossed type He so thoroughly identified himself with the Home Teaching Society that it is difficult to conceive what his loss to us by death really means He gave himself for others always was the motto woven in a beautiful wreath of his favorite flowers a gift of his devoted friends and placed upon the bier when his body was consigned to rest.
