Renowned artist and illustrator best known for the "Prince Valiant" cartoon strip for 34 years. Born in New York City, he was interested in art from an early age; Murphy attended the Art Institute of Chicago at age 9, where a neighbor, Norman Rockwell, had him model for a "Saturday Evening Post" cover and then became his mentor, resulting in a scholarship to the Phoenix Art Institute in New York. Set in Medieval times and resplendent in its richly detailed drawings, literary storylines and historical accuracy, "Prince Valiant" stood out on comics pages dominated by simple drawings and gags. Murphy drew "Prince Valiant" for over three decades; it appeared weekly in some 300 newspapers. He was a past president of the National Cartoonists Society and a six-time recipient of the society's "Best Story Strip" award. Died of natural causes in Greenwich, Connecticut. Funeral was held in St. Catherine of Siena church in Riverside, Connecticut; burial was private. and location not disclosed.
