Don excelled in business in So. California, starting and developing a paving and general contracting business in North County. His wide variety of support businesses, including sand, gravel, asphalt and concrete plants, helped fuel the growth of a generation of San Diegans, building roads to new and developing neighborhoods. His employees recall, with affection, his crisp direction, but also his caring interest in the welfare of all his workers, leavened with a fine sense of humor. But of course Don was not all work.
In his few spare moments, Don loved to fly, having a private pilot's license. He also loved to travel, visiting many exotic locales. And finally, Don's good sense of humor came in handy, as he was an avid golfer. Don was a kind man, never failing to place his family first.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy; his brother, Jurgen; sisters-in-law, Lois, Leora and Catherine; and his brother-in-law, Doneth Crouse; and many nieces and nephews.
Don was fondly remembered by all at a private service held September 12, 2008 at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside California. All who were fortunate enough to meet Don will miss him. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com Published in North County Times on October 5, 2008
