Best known for his role as attorney "Jon Hanley" in the television soap opera "General Hospital," Mathis, who was HIV+, stunned the entertainment industry with his 1993 plea in Variety magazine for work in order to keep his medical insurance. His career included work in the Broadway touring companies of "Pippin" and "Zorba the Greek" along with the movies, "All That Jazz," "Pippin: His Life and Times" and "Murder in the First." He appeared as the poetically correct "Francis" in the play "Red Ribbon Blues" in 1996.
