J.E. Alford was a son of Jefferson J. Alford and his second wife, Nancy Ann Edwards Alford.

James Edward had three whole siblings, Eliza, Georgia and Francis, and six half-siblings by his father and three other wives.

J.E. and his wife, Harriett Lillian Smith Alford, children were: William Luther, Thomas Breckenridge "Brack", James Edward "Eddie", Jr., Stonewall Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Infant unnamed, Robert E. Lee, Annie Maria, Fredrick Oliver and Lizette Alford.

J.E. Alford served in Company F, 12th Battalion Alabama Cavalry during the Civil War. He was captured and paroled May 26, 1865 in Talladega, Alabama.
