Willis Crouch, 56, a foreman in the rotary station at the aluminum plant, died suddenly at about 6:45 o'clock Wednesday night, Sept. 25, 1957, while driving his car along a country lane near Nicholville. Mr. and Mrs. Crouch had gone to Nicholville to visit their daughter, Mrs. Nolan Sheldon, and family and had stopped at a gravel pit to bring home a few sacks and pails of gravel to fill holes in the yard at 9 Brighton St. He had sacked up the gravel, loaded it, and he and Mrs. Crouch were driving along the lane at a very slow speed, when he was stricken. The car went into the ditch but Mrs. Crouch was able to get her husband's foot off the gasoline pedal. He had become unconscious. She opened the car window but the air failed to revive him and she ran for help. Mr. and Mrs. Crouch were injured in an automobile accident last Sept. 23 near Moira. He suffered cuts and a concussion and Mrs. Crouch was seriously injured at that time. One June 19, 1954, their 13 year old son, Dale Crouch, drowned in the Grasse River, a mile west of the village limits while swimming with some other boys. He was an alter boy at Sacred Heart church and was scheduled to graduate from the ninth grade within a few days. Mr. Crouch was born in Massena, May 27, 1903, a son of Mrs. Mary LaCombe Crouch, E. Orvis st., and the late George Crouch. He attended schools here and began working as a helper in the chemical laboratory June 7, 1918. He had positions in labor rotary, rolling and cable mills, pump stations and finally the rotary station. He became a member of the 25-year club in 1943. He was a member of Massena Lodge 1702, Elks and communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He married Gladys R. Currier, Oct 21, 1934, the ceremony being performed in Sacred Heart Church by the late Rt. Rev. Magr. Timothy P. Holland. She was employed by the New York Telephone Company. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Crouch; wife; one daughter, Mrs. Nolan (Beverly) Sheldon, Nicholville, and one son, Charles Crouch, at home, one grandson Terry Sheldon; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Crouch, Whitney, wife of Dr. Leon Whitney, Morristown, N.J., and Mrs. John P. (Geneva) King, Massena. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at Sacred Heart Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. The body is being taken to the family home at 3 Brighton St.
