James M. Devers enlisted in the 10th Missouri Cavalry in Clinton County, Missouri in late 1862, and became a Quantrill Guerrilla (under Capt. George Todd) during General Sterling Price's raid on Missouri in the fall of 1864. His mother and siblings lived in Clay County, Missouri with relatives during the war, not far from the home of Jesse and Frank James. After the war, he became one of the original members of the James gang, and was hanged by a vigilance committee on March 17, 1868 for his alleged role in the Richmond, Missouri of May, 1867. One of his commrades, Andy McGuire, was also hanged. They are both buried in unmarked graves of this cemetery.
