MANY FRIENDS MOURN DEATH OF MRS. GEHBE

The sadness of death and keen sorrow of loss was brought home to many friends Thursday evening when the announcement of the demise of Mrs. Mary Ellen Gehbe, wife of Dr. Frank H. Gehbe, was made, Mrs. Gehbe's death occurring at the family home 1111 Huron street at 4 o'clock. While it was known to friends that her condition was critical and that hope of her recovery had been abandoned, the announcement that the end had come was a great shock.

Mrs. Gehbe's death was primarily due to rheumatism from which she had suffered for a long time. Several months ago she departed for California in hope that the climate would benefit her but it was a futile hope and a month ago, realizing that the battle was a losing one, she planned to return home to be with her family when the end came. She arrived in the city last Friday and since that time had been confined to her bed, her condition critical, and death but a matter of time. Mrs. Gehbe accepted the inevitable with a brave spirit and resignation that had been characteristic of her long fight for health. The end came peacefully. Her husband, daughter and other relatives were at her beside when the end came.

Native of Brown County.
Mary Ellen Savage was born at Pittsfield, Brown county, February 5, 1875 and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Savage. The family later removed to Glenmore and then locating at Cato, this county, where Mrs. Gehbe spent her girlhood days. For a year she taught school in Montana and then took a special course in commercial work at Valpariaso, Ind., followed by a year spent as teacher in the commercial department of the Green Bay high school.

On December 28, 1900 deceased was married to Dr. Frank H. Gehbe, then a resident of Clarks Mills, and soon after the couple came to this city where they have since resided. Mrs. Gehbe was a member of St. Boniface church and took an active interest in church work up to the time of her illness. She was a member of Eureka Review Women's Benefit association of the Maccabees in which organization she enjoyed a wide popularity. Mrs. Gehbe was a woman of strength of character and brilliant accomplishments. She possessed a keen mind and was a student and while the serious side of life appealed most to her as a student, she was a delightful hostess and entertaining companion in social life. During the months of suffering which she underwent Mrs. Gehbe's true character was demonstrated and glorified and she endured with a courage that was remarkable. She was cheerful and despite her own sufferings, she was helpful and ready with sympathy for friends.

Mother Accompanies Her Home
Mrs. Gehbe was accompanied from California on her trip home by her mother, Mrs. Callsta Savage who was with her when death came. In the west Mrs. Gehbe was with daughter Mrs. Alfred Waterson at Bishop and her brother Hugh, of Concord. Mrs. Gehbe's condition became grave on Sunday when she seemed to suffer a collapse, due to fatigue of the journey and from that time to the end, there had been no hope held out.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Gehbe is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Florence Watterson, of Bishop, Calif., and Miss Callsta, of this city, her mother Mrs. Savage, three sisters, Mrs. W.G. Morrisey, Reedsville, Mrs. C.L. Post, Centralia, Wash., and Mrs. L. Svacina of Grimms and by three brothers, Hugh Savage, of Concord, Calif., Stephen Savage of Green Bay and Dr. J.T. Savage, of this city.

Funeral Held Tomorrow
The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning from the home to Sacred Heart church at 9 o'clock, the Rev. W.J. Luby officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery.

Relatives here for the funeral are Green Bay, Dr. George Gehbe of Osh- Wauwautosa (sic), Mrs. Oscar Hurley of Chicago and Mrs. William Cullitan of Chicago, sisters of Dr. Gehbe.
