Irene (Oryna) was born on May 1, 1869 in the village of Bednarka, which at the time was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and in what is now Southern Poland.
She was the daughter of Joannas (John, as listed on later records) Popowczak and Anna Zynski. Irene was the 2nd of 5 siblings; Anastasia Popivchak (Pavliszyer / Pauliczak / Paulizak), Irene Popivchak (Szewczyk / Scheftic / Sheftic), Andrew, Michael and Joseph Popivchak.
She married Petro Szewczyk (Peter Scheftic), a skilled Carpenter, on September 22, 1889, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, according to "Pennsylvania County Marriages, 1885 - 1950," index and images".
Irene and Peter had 12 children, and ultimately settled in Auburn, New York. Peter died on October 20, 1930, and Irene on December 1, 1938, from Cirrhosis of the Liver, brought on by Sugar Diabetes & Complications.
