Funeral services were held Sunday, November 12, 1978 from the chapel of the Obaugh Funeral Home for Leonard Harper Hammer, 66, of Blue Grass, who died Friday, November 10 at King's Daughters' Hospital. The service was conducted by the Reverend Kenneth Horne, and interment was in the Blue Grass Cemetery.

Mr. Hammer, a farmer and livestock dealer was born at Blue Grass March 10, 1912, a son of Luther and Esther Waybright Hammer. A member of the Central Methodist Church, he was a charter member of the Blue Grass Ruritan Club, and was a member of the Highland County School Electoral Board.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Virginia Wimer Hammer; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Betty) Hogshead of McDowell, and Mrs William (Sandra) Bratton of Bolar; six brothers, Glenn Hammer of Monterey, John, William and James Hammer of Waynesboro, Cyrus Hammer of Ft. Defiance, and Luther Hammer, Jr. of Blue Grass; four sisters, Mrs. Gladys Newman and Mrs. Leona Gutshall both of Monterey, Mrs. Marie Newman of Blue Grass, and Mrs. Virginia Rexrode of Franklin W. Va.; four grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.

Active pallbearers were George L. Hogshead, Greg Hogshead, John Wagoner, Eugene Wimer, Robert Hammer, Eugene Wimer, James L. Mauzy, Jr. and Harold Newman.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Blue Grass Cemetery Fund.
