Ervin was born on the Phelps farm in LeRoy township of Lake county. He was baptized and confirmed in First Presbyterian Church of Madison, SD. At the age of 13, due to the death of his father in 1914, Ervin and his mother, Augusta, continued to farm on the Phelps farm east of Madison. He married Anna Mae Winesburg at Madison on June 17, 1925. They moved to Detroit Lakes, MN, in 1949 and later, in 1957, they moved to Fergus Falls, MN where they ran the Spot Cafe. He retired in the 1970's.

In Fergus Falls, he belonged to the Eagles, the Elks, and the Federated Church. In Madison, he had been on the school board, was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, and was a member of the IOOF Lodge.

Ervin and Mae had three daughters and one son.
