Gene was born in Wentworth where he grew up at graduated from high school in 1940. He married Carolyn Laderer in Oldham on June 16, 1944. They owned a cafe in Oldham and later farmed in the Oldham and Madison area. They moved to DeSmet and managed the Kingsbury County Country Club as well as farming. They then owned the No Name Supper Club in DeSmet until Gene semi-retired in 1989. Gene was a member of the American Lutheran Church where he was on the church board and taught Sunday school. He also played amateur baseball at Oldham and served on the Mathews Township board of Kingsbury County.
