LAD, 5, KILLED WHEN TRUCK STRIKES HIM

Vernon Versteeg Walking Along Road at Hopewell With His Mother

HOPEWELL, March 8 – Sideswiped by a passing auto truck, George Vernon Versteeg, 5, sustained a fractured skull on the road near Hopewell, Friday morning, and died soon after being brought to a local hospital.

The lad was walking down the road with his mother when the truck of the State Bottling Works at Salem passed the couple. The driver, Lloyd Anderson, pulled out as he passed them, but the rear end of the truck struck the youth. Anderson, not knowing that his auto had injured the lad, had proceeded some distance down the road when he was met by a car whose driver informed him of the accident.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Hopewell Seventh Day Adventist church which was crowded with friends and relatives of the dead boy. The Ladd Funeral home had charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Hopewell cemetery. Vernon Versteeg, as he was known in the Hopewell community, was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Versteeg. He has a younger sister and a baby brother surviving him as well as his parents.
