Near the end of his life, he visited his brother, Oscar Jefferson Davis in Baltimore, Maryland (in the home of Oscar's son, George William Davis). His picture is from that visit, about 1945.
Shortly after this, he returned to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and according to the police report, he stopped to rest on a car that was parked (and the driver was shopping?). Uncle Jim had never driven a car in his life, but the driver evidently returned to his car and ran over him by mistake (he didn't know that Uncle Jim was 'resting' on the back bumper).
The family was notified that Uncle Jim had been buried, without a headstone, in a pauper's grave -- which is now under an access road.
