GUADALUPE ARCHULETA-AVALOS, 92 years old of Las Cruces left her dwelling place on earth and entered eternal life to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003. Lupe, as she was fondly called, was born Dec. 12, 1910, in Clifton, AZ. to Reynaldo and Josefina Roquillo.

She has been a resident of Las Cruces since 1920 and a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral since 1968. In 1920 her widowed mother moved the family from El Paso, TX to Las Cruces.

On April 5, 1926 she married Anastacio Archuleta, at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, located downtown. From this beautiful union, 11 children were born. She was widowed in 1969. From 1950 to 1968 Lupe worked as a baker in the Las Cruces Public Schools cafeterias where she was well known and recognized for her delicious baked goods, especially her empanadas. The "next chapter" in her life as she described it was her marriage to Luciano Avalos on January 29, 1977, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. Mr. Avalos died in 1996.
