Services set for retired WBR registrar
PORT ALLEN - The funeral for longtime West Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters Sybil Newsham is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Newsham, 73, died Saturday after a lengthy illness.
Visiting is scheduled for 9 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., celebrated by Monsignor Robert Bergreen.
Burial will follow at Grace Episcopal Cemetery in St. Francisville.
Newsham, a Plaquemine native, is survived by three daughters, three sisters, a brother, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Newsham served as registrar for 23 years until health problems forced her to retire earlier this year.
"When she retired, we lost a good registrar. She ran that office with a sense of looking out for the public and following the law. She did everything according to Hoyle. She stood up to adversity. She didn't bend," Clerk of Court Thomas LeBlanc said.
"We had a good working relationship. We worked together on elections and schooling election commissioners. What she didn't know, she found out. Sybil did not mind calling on someone for help."
"I've known Sybil since I came to Port Allen 40 years ago. She was always known as somebody who went strictly by the rules. She administered the voter registration rules strictly. She was tough," Parish President Ted Denstel said.
"A lot of parish politicians tried to get rid of her, but she stood up to all of them," he said.
"Sybil was a strong supporter of the home rule charter and the new form of government. I could always count on her as one of my closest friends in government," Denstel said.
