He picked up the nickname "Doc" either from the army or at Douglass which is the name most people knew him by. It remains a mystery as to where the nickname came from or what it meant.
After the war he worked for McDonnell Douglas for over 30 years as an inspector of aircraft. During this time he met his second wife Clara and they had no children. He was a member of the Masons at the Masonic "Triangle" Lodge 548 in Venice and became a Master Mason in 1949.
He was survived by his wife Clara Louisa Howard, son Frank Harry Howard and granddaughters Lori Lou Howard and Lisa Ann Howard.
