Cokedale began in the 1880's with the construction of more than 100 coke ovens, built to process coal mined in the Gallatin Mountains. The ruins of many of the coke ovens remain and can be found along the Cokedale Road, west of Livingston. A post office opened at Cokedale in 1889 (January 16) with Joseph Daily as postmaster. The post office closed in 1900 (March 15), then opened again in 1903 (May 29) and remained open until 1906 (June 15).
