Educated in Rome, he was ordained a priest April 7, 1821 in that city, for the Diocese of Bardstown, Kentucky. Served on the faculty of St. Thomas Seminary in Bardstown, and attended the First Provincial Council of Baltimore as a theologian to Bishop Benedict Flaget of Bardstown. Consecrated Coadjutor Bishop of Philadelphia and administrator of the diocese, June 6, 1830. Succeeded to the See of Philadelphia, April 22, 1842, upon the death of Bishop Henry Conwell. Promoted Archbishop of Baltimore, Auguts 3, 1851. Presided over the First Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1852.
