'BETTY' GUNSTROM MULBERRY (Signe Elizabeth Grundström) was born on May 17, 1907 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to:
GOTTFRID GRUNDSTROM (1880-1966) and
BEDA GRUNDSTROM (D-1966).

Her parents, Gottfrid and Beda had immigrated from Sweden in September 1906. They began their travels in Goteborg to Hull, England. The couple then traveled on 02 October 1906 from Liverpool, England across the sea aboard the S.S. SAXONIA along with their 5-month-old son Birger William Carl Grundström, also known as 'Bill'. It must have been a long journey, and the young family traveled in 'Steerage', which could not have been an easy voyage. They arrived at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts on October 11, 1906. Their last name may have been shortened to 'GUNSTROM' when they arrived in Winnipeg.

In 1907, the year after the family arrived in Winnipeg, the couple had a daughter named Signe Elizabeth 'Betty' Grundström. Four years later another daughter was born, Elsa Amerencia Gunström. Thirteen years later, a fourth child was born, Fred Bertyl Gunström. The child was not healthy, and he passed away at one year of age.

Gottfrid's younger brother Axel Grundström also emigrated to Canada from Sweden. He lived in Retlaw, Alberta. Axel made a trip from Alberta to Manitoba and was in attendance at the Baptism of his niece, Signe Elisabeth Grundström on 21 July 1907 at the FCS Mission Church [First Canadian Scandinavian Mission Church]. His signature can be found on the Church Baptism records for Signe Elisabeth as a witness, along with a man named 'Ernst Ostman', also from Sweden. The clergyman was J.E. Bjorklund.

As a young woman, Betty worked in Winnipeg at PICARDY'S FINE CHOCOLATES as a 'Chocolate dipper', creating the design on the tops of fine chocolates. She could tell you what type of filling was inside, just by looking at the design atop the chocolate. She also worked at Gillespie's Store. Betty was a good cook and made the most delicious scones, spritz cookies, shortbread, and fruit cake among many other pastries. She loved to wear nice clothing, and took pride in making herself look nice.

BETTY GUNSTROM married
VERNON BARNETT MULBERRY on
September 30, 1930

The 7:00 p.m. wedding was held at Gordon Hill Memorial Church of Elmwood, with Reverend David G. Paton officiating.
Best Man was the groom's brother Sid Mulberry
Maid of Honor was Violet Ellenthorpe.

Vernon and Betty Mulberry had two sons:

LORNE VERNON MULBERRY (1931-2007)
BRYAN LYLE MULBERRY (1936-)

The couple first lived at 391 Talbot, and then rented a home at 82 Coburg Avenue. Bryan Mulberry said he remembers opening up Christmas presents at this house. Finally, the couple built a home at 24 Elm Park Road in St. Vital, where they lived for many years with their sons.

After her husband, Vern retired the couple eventually sold their home on Elm Park Road. They moved to Burnaby, British Columbia for a time in transition and preparing for their move to Southern California. They eventually bought a townhome in Fullerton, California, where they lived for five years. They enjoyed life in California with lovely weather, beautiful scenery, and colourful vegetation. They decided that they would like to spend their last years back up in Winnipeg. They sold the California townhome and purchased another home at 79 Rockspur Street in Winnipeg. It had three levels, an attached garage, and a nice big backyard to enjoy. Once again, Grandpa had a workbench to putter around in the garage and built one in the basement as well.

Betty and Vern had many friends in Winnipeg that they loved to visit with ... Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gee, Tommy and Heather Cosford, Mr. and Mrs. Burns, as well as her sister and brother and family. Betty was a good hostess! When guests arrived,
++ she would always put on a pot of tea to steep. She would serve tea in her best English bone china along with a cookie or pastry for her guests. In the evening, she would bring a plate with toast and jam and a cup of tea to Vern, while the two sat and watched the evening news.

Vern lived on Rockspur Street until he departed this earth. He died of complications that arose after prostate cancer, leaving behind his dear wife Betty. Betty Mulberry passed away on November 4, 1991, at Central Park Lodge, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Both Betty and her husband Vernon are buried in Plot: CE 2001 Section 16 (Interment 48320) at ELMWOOD CEMETERY in Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA. They are buried right above Betty's parents, Beda and Gottfrid Gunström, and her sister Elsa Gunström Klippel and her husband Bill Klippel. All of the headstones are in a grouping, with the exception of her younger brother Fred Bertyl Grundström, who is buried in section 822-16.
