Jerry's parents were John and Katherine (Varney) Campbell. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was stationed in England and flew numerous missions as a load master over Nazi Germany and France. After his honorable discharge, he returned to South Dakota and married Ione Hanneman on June 6, 1946.
Jerry worked as a bulk oil deliveryman for Speck Sauder Standard Oil. He was owner of Jerry's Standard Station in Madison. He also worked for John Morrell's meatpacking plant in Madison until it closed. In his retirement he worked at Lake Herman State Park, Prarie Village, and for Green Thumb.
He was a lifetime member of the Madison VFW, serving as Commander in 1958. He was a past member of the American Legion, serving as Commander in 1971. He was also a member of the Izaak Walton League and the Sandpipers Camping Club.
Jerry died at the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, SD. Funeral services were held at St. John Lutheran Church in Madison. He was buried with military honors provided by VFW Post #2638, American Legion Post #25, and the South Dakota Air National Guard.
