About 1934, during the Great Depression, Fred and Edna May fell into some hard times. Fred found himself out of a job and with a homeless family. He soon found shelter in a vacant frame house that had been the home of the superintendent of the abandoned J.C. Swanson Tile factory located at 3725 Marshall St., just outside of the Minneapolis City Limits between the Mississippi river and the old East River Road. There was no electricity or running water in the house; but, with the permission and blessing of the owner, J.C. SWANSON, who was retired and in his 90's, Fred made repairs and improvements to his home and some of the other adjacent properties owned by Swanson. Fred planted some crops on the vacant RR property behind the buildings, built a large chicken coup from the readily available tile in the abandoned brickyard, and he opened a produce stand in his front yard on the East River Road, selling his produce and produce supplied by one of Edna May's friends David and Treva BIRD, truck gardners of Richfield, MN. - William L. DeCoursey

In the summer of 1948 Fred's father, Leslie DeCoursey, entered a nursing home, and Fred and Edna May moved from Fridley to Fred's parent's home at 1010-26th Ave NE, Minnespolis to care for his step-mother, Etta (Hill) DeCoursey, who was crippled with arthritis.

Edna May (FERREL) DeCOURSEY died, 3 Mar 1952, at Minneapolis, Minnesota from cancer and complications of sugar diabetes. She was totally blind and an invalid for about four years prior to her death. Her widower, Fred P. DeCoursey, married 2nd, 25 Sep 1954, to Bernice Irene (HALL) GRAY (1901-1970)
