Benjamin Franklin "Dick" Carter, 87, of Taylor Mill Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Mr. Carter was born in Gates County on Dec. 4, 1914, and was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Smith and Myrtle Harrell Carter, and his first wife, Pat Carter. For 37 years he was employed with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock and retired as the supervisor of Dept. X-32. A member and former deacon of Eure Christian Church, his memberships also included the Woodmen of the World Lodge #965 in Eure; Warwick Masonic Lodge #336 in Newport News; Gatesville Masonic Lodge #126 in Gatesville, N.C.; Masons Hall Masonic Lodge #1785 in Richmond, Va.; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Virginia, Orient Newport News Chapter; Chapter #335 The Order of the Eastern Star in Gatesville, N.C.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Edith Carter; his son, Richard S. Carter and his wife, Lynn, of Newport News; stepchildren, Faye Casper and her husband, Wade, of Sunbury and Ray Felton and his wife, Judy, of Eure; his grandson, Sean Carter of San Diego, Calif.; five step-grandsons, Wayne Felton of Raleigh, Brock Felton of Eure, Kevin Felton of Lake Tahoe, Calif., David Casper of Hobbsville, and Daniel Casper of Sunbury; a step-granddaughter, Monica Holloway Farkas of Los Angeles, Calif.; three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Myrtle McComb of Newport News, Virginia Mullen of Eure and Carrie Oliver of Portsmouth; special friends, Irma and Bobby Grant and their family; and caregivers, Nell Long and Judy Wilson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eure Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial with full Masonic rites will be at 2:30 p.m. in Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and other times at his residence. Following the graveside rites on Tuesday, the family will receive friends at the home of Richard and Lynn Carter, 205 Abbitt Lane, Newport News.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Eure Christian Church, Eure, NC 27935 or the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.
