Charles R. Buddenhagen was the youngest son of Christian and Elizabeth Smith Buddenhagen, immigrants from Germany and Scotland, respectively. He was a farmer in rural Labette and Neosho counties in Kansas, although he spent time in Pueblo, CO, working at a steel works factory before serving in WWI. According to his military draft registration, he was medium height, medium build with blue eyes and blond hair. He lost a leg in the battle of Ypres while serving with the Army during WWI in Canada.
